Murmo Notes

Say it.It’s written down.

Murmo Notes is a voice note app for iPhone and Apple Watch. Start a recording on either one and talk. Your iPhone turns it into text on the device itself, and when you mention something you want to be reminded of, it goes straight into Reminders and Calendar. Recordings and transcripts stay on your own devices.

Two ways in.One place it ends up.

iPhone and Apple Watch are both full ways to record. Transcription happens on the iPhone.

  1. 1

Record on iPhone or Apple Watch

On the watch, opening the app starts recording; tap once to stop. On the iPhone, tap the record button, or start directly from Siri, a shortcut, the Action button, Control Center or a Lock Screen widget. Got it wrong? Tap cancel. Recordings shorter than 2 seconds are discarded automatically.

  2. 2

Your iPhone turns it into text

A speech model on the iPhone transcribes the recording on the device. A recording made on the watch is first sent to the iPhone it is paired with, and is transcribed even while the phone is locked in your pocket.

  3. 3

Reminders and events are written for you

When what you said is clear, it goes straight into Reminders or Calendar once transcription finishes. When it isn’t, it is listed for you to confirm. Everything written can be undone with one tap.

Two buttons while you record. The same on both devices.

Highlight

Tap it when you reach the important part. Once transcribed, that sentence is marked in yellow, and the recording gets a star in the list.

Remind

Tap it when you say something you want to be reminded of. Once transcribed, that sentence becomes a reminder directly, with no confirmation step. If it is wrong, undo it.

Which sentence you tapped on is estimated from how far through the recording you were, not located word by word. It is most accurate when a recording covers one thing; with several sentences in one recording, it can land on the one next to it.

Lightweight. Apple-native.Kept on the device.

Three principles. What it does and what it leaves out both follow from them.

Read the privacy policy

Lightweight

The watch has a single screen: a stop button, a timer and the two mark buttons. The phone has a list of transcripts and a settings page. No account, no sign-in.

Apple-native

Reminders go into the system’s Reminders app and events into Calendar, not into yet another to-do list. Recording can start from Siri, Shortcuts, the Action button, Control Center or a Lock Screen widget on the iPhone, and from a complication or Control Center on the watch.

Kept on the device

Recording, transcription and recognising reminders all happen on your devices. The app does not connect to any server, call any third-party service, or use a cloud model. The speech model (about 216 MB) is currently installed with the app and works as soon as it is installed.

One thing the app does not decide

Reminders and Calendar are Apple’s apps. Whether what is written there syncs to your other devices through iCloud depends on your own iCloud settings.

A few small things.Thought about in advance.

Stops when nobody is talking
After 30 seconds in a row with nobody speaking, recording stops by itself and the trailing silence is trimmed. A recording with no speech at all is not saved.
The original is always kept
What you see is tidied text: misheard words corrected, filler words removed, punctuation added. The transcript itself is left untouched, and one tap switches back to it. The original audio is kept too, so it can be transcribed again.
Teach it a word once
In the custom word list, enter what was heard and what it should be. Past and future recordings are both corrected accordingly.
When unsure, it asks
If the time is not clear, or it is hard to tell whether something is a to-do, nothing is written automatically. It is listed for confirmation and written only when you tap.
Face ID lock
Turned on in settings; off by default. It locks the list and its contents, not recording: you can still record right away while it is locked.
One tap from the watch face
The watch has a “start recording” complication and a Control Center button. One tap opens the app and starts recording.
